We just bought a huge house outside of Mesa..my husband is from L.A. His family (glued to So Cal) is so glued to L.A. for some odd reason. Despite real estate prices and crowded freeways (smoggy too) they are raving about how we made a "bad bad" choice to move.....and buy new! For cheaper! Can anyone offer me some suggestions on what to say to combat their negativeness? I know Phoenix is beautiful to live and work, and its real promising. I cannot give them enough "comebacks"! Can someone help me out??

First, you'd have to know what their reasons are for saying you made a bad choice (BTW, I disagree with them). If they don't tell you why, then you really have nothing to combat, so you have to find that out first.

Though again, if they don't give you any reasons, you could always say something to them out of the blue like, "You shouldn't have purchased that car that you have.. that was a bad bad choice." When they ask why, you can just say, "I know you got a good deal on it, it drives like a dream, and it gets great gas mileage, I just think it was a bad idea." And make sure they know what you're referencing :-).

Well first of all, they think buying a house there is a bad investment. We bought new, to me its a great investment. And we got a deal. Here, you get a shack of a house for a whopping 400K.......there is traffic everywhere, smog, too many people etc etc. They think CA is land of beauty - they think there are no jobs in AZ, hot heat, traffic worse than here, and houses that will lose value. ??? Explain to me why someone would be so dumb to pay 375K for a 2 BR/1 BA (900 sq ft) when you can get a house in Mesa for a good 180K. ? Sure AZ is hot, but its only really really hot for maybe 3-4 months. The rest of the year its the same as here, probably better (aint no humidity in AZ). Anyways, I am and always will be a fan of AZ. I love the whole state. Always have.

<Well first of all, they think buying a house there is a bad investment. We bought new, to me its a great investment.>

The value of your house will likely go up about 30% over the next five years. I'm a real-estate investor also, and I've made some pretty good side money with Arizona

properties.

<They think CA is land of beauty>

Try to get them to visit.. then take them to Sedona, the Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon(gra'nd KA'N-yu'n)

Located entirely in northern Arizona, the park encompasses 277 miles of the Colorado River and adjacent uplands. One of the most spectacular examples of erosion anywhere in the world, Grand Canyon is unmatched in the incomparable vistas it offers to visitors on the rim.

, the Painted Desert, Verde Canyon, Jerome, Prescott, the Mogollon Rim, or just about anywhere else you'd want to go. You wouldn't believe how many visitors I've converted to residents by taking them just to see some of these places. Then again, maybe you don't want them to live here :-).

<they think there are no jobs in AZ>

California's unemployment rate is 6.4%, that's 0.4% above the national. Arizona's is 5.6%. And Phoenix has been a booming technology area for years. Our unemployment rate is almost always lower than the average. If anyone here can remember a time when it was actually higher, let me know.

<hot heat>

Well they got you there :-). But I'm sure you'll find yourself spending the majority of your Arizona

hot months in an air-conditioned area or in the pool, so it doesn't really matter.

<traffic worse than here>

I would say that this is comparable. I don't know about California, but I know that here we are expanding the number of freeways at what seems to be a very quick rate. A light-rail system is also in progress.

<and houses that will lose value. ???>

If I remember correctly, the last time the real-estate market was losing value in Arizona

I just found this site. It's great! My fiance and I have been living in a house for a year here in So Cal that I bought for quite a high price. We discovered what you could get in the Phoenix area buy watching "House Hunters". We took a trip out there and we're hooked! So we are now selling our So Cal home and moving into a home three times the size and a lot size twice the size in Chandler and we're going to be able to afford a new car out of the deal also. We are so excited to move there because we need the larger home since we work out of the home and plan to have two more children.
Yes California is out of control as far as what you can get here. And our So Cal home here is 60 years old and would eventually put us in the poor house with all it has to have done to it. Those people tellilng you how bad it is in Phoenix live in their own LA world. I woulnd't even bother with justifying yourself and just enjoy what you can get and have compared to them.
