illegal immigrants
Post New MessageIsnt your wife an illeagal immigrant from canada? Or if she is not now wasnt she at one time?
I'll have to make a few assumptions here. First off, you're posting in a public forum and starting a new discussion that which up until I posted this message, you were the only participant. When you say "you" and "your", who are you talking about? You are the only one here. So I'll have to assume that you're talking to me, in reference to being the person that runs this site, and in reference to an article that I recently wrote about denying freebies to illegal immigrants.
To answer your question, my wife arrived in the US legally as a visitor and has since applied for her adjustment to permanent status. Nothing illegal about that.
Regarding your misinterpretation of my article; I have nothing against illegal immigrants simply by virtue of being here illegally. My problem with illegal immigrants is when they mooch off of the system that US taxpayers pay for. I already don't like the existance of social services.. it's not my responsibility to take care of someone who can't take care of themselves. That's bad enough. What's worse is when someone runs across the desert or is smuggled in the back of a truck, and then demands that they be freely given all of the same privileges (medical, welfare, education, etc) that citizens are given, and they don't contribute to the system at all.
My wife, who is still a Canadian citizen and has filed for her adjustment of status (that is a long and difficult process) has never mooched off of the system. She has paid for all of her own expenses, including trips to the emergency room. We don't believe in stealing, and taxing people to use the money for social services is simply a legalized form of stealing.
Nick, I'm Canadian living in Tucson and going through all the AOS stuff too. I'm waiting for my interview letter. Well, I actually got one, but it crossed in the mail with my change of address notification. I got one from the Tucson office and my husband is at he Border patrol academy, so I had to postpone that one too. Luckily the Tucson office is pretty easy to deal with.
Are you and your wife in Tucson? I'd love to meet a fellow Canadian.
We're actually in Phoenix (Tempe).. we travel the state quite a bit, but tend to normally go north instead of south.
She's from Montreal and posts here every once in awhile. Perhaps she'll spot this thread.
I don't understand the point/purpose of this thread. What does anyone care who (or whose wife) is an illegal immigrant?
Several months back, I posted an article criticizing giving out freebies (welfare, health care, etc) to illegal aliens. Some mistook this as an attack on illegal aliens, and believed I was being hypocritical because they thought that my wife was here illegally, which is not true.
Ah, I see.
Well in that case...
I can see your point on welfare. Healthcare, however, should be a human right worldwide. So I have to disagree on that point.
Illegal immigrants, especially those from South of the border, are just here trying to make things better for their family. They probably tried getting papers and were denied, so they did the only other thing they could do.
Besides, we're all God's people, we all share the same Earth. I wouldn't feel right about clinging selfishly to the place I just happened to be born in, keeping it away from those who just happened to be born elsewhere. Share the blessings!
Just to summarize how I feel about the issue.

If healthcare could be provided by some magical infallible self-sustaining machine that fixed people's medical issues, then I would agree. However, one person's "right to healthcare" is another person's "obligation to provide healthcare." People can opt to donate to help someone pay medical expenses, or a doctor can donate their time to help those that can't afford healthcare. But it's not right to take money from people that have worked for it to give it to those that haven't, whether to pay for healthcare or anything else.

I disagree with providing welfare or healthcare with tax dollars to anyone, not just illegal immigrants. But the article that I wrote was in response to a news article written, which in turn was a response to an initiative to cease paying these expenses for illegal immigrants.
I have no quarrel with people moving to America to try and make a better life for themselves and their families, just so long as they do it by working for it and carrying their own weight, not making me carry it for them.
Goombayah... Oh Lord! WHAT PART OF 'ILLEGAL' DON'T SOME PEOPLE UNDERSTAND? This is a nation of laws... we have borders... we are taxed and insured to pay for all the 'bennies'. Illegals are doin' a free ride... and are not accountable. The sooner the southern border is fenced and patrolled the batter.
But you would be ignorant to believe that these people want to be here illegally. It is very difficult to get papers these days, because this has become a country of selfish people who are unwilling to share the wealth. That has made its way all the way up to the highest governments, and now there are laws that make it next to impossible for the average Mexican family to be allowed into the U.S.
But I'm sure I might as well be speaking to a brick wall, so I'll end my argument here.
