road trip in AZ

Hello, one fine day I happened upon your website & now keep it bookmarked. Good information in it, thanks!

I'm thinking of taking my measley 2 wk holiday end of Jan., to fly down to Phoenix, rent a car & explore. What I'm looking for is: 1) small interesting communities to visit, and 2) VERY cheap accommodation. I spent a couple winters there in an RV (unfortunately had to sell it), but mostly was in the Yuma area. I'd like to explore the southeast portion, but maybe it'll be too cold? I'm going south to escape BCs damp, drab weather. Any ideas? Words of wisdom?

Also, I will probably be travelling alone, won't be going out at night by myself, so nightlife isn't a concern.
