Billy Moore created a freight station here the 1900's. The place was called
Coldwater, which referred to the on and off flowing Agua Fria River.
Soon, it began to grow as an agricultural town. The area became
known as Arizona's salad bowl. The land produced lettuce, carrots, cauliflower,
onions and many other vegetables. The melons, dates and citrus grown here
are among the best in the state. Cotton, wheat, barley and alfalfa are
also produced.
Avondale was incorporated in 1946. The town
is one of the largest farming areas. It has seen a big growth spurt between
1980 and 1990, nearly doubling in size. Today, Avondale has become a hot
spot for car racing and new housing.
