Formation and Geology

The caverns were formed over 200 million years ago during the Triassic period, when the area was part of a shallow sea. Over time, groundwater seeped through the rock, dissolving the limestone and creating vast underground chambers. The park's geologist, Richard Karshner, discovered the caverns in 1974 while leading a caving expedition. Today, visitors can explore over 2 miles of passages and see unique formations such as towering stalactites and stalagmites.

Exploring the Caverns

The park offers two guided tours: the Discovery Tour and the Adventure Tour. The Discovery Tour is a 1-hour tour that covers about half a mile of passage, while the Adventure Tour is a 2.5-hour tour that covers over a mile of passage. Visitors can also take a self-guided tour of the surface area, which includes exhibits on geology, wildlife, and Native American culture.
