The Sacred Summit of Kitt Peak National Observatory

Perched atop the Quinlan Mountains in southern Arizona, Kitt Peak National Observatory is a world-renowned research center dedicated to exploring galaxies, solar activity, and the cosmos beyond. Established in 1958 on Tohono O'odham land, this national observatory honors Indigenous traditions through ceremonial access, education programs, and land stewardship.

A Brief History of Stargazing at Kitt Peak

Kitt Peak has been a sacred site for the Tohono O'odham Nation for centuries. The name "Kitt" is derived from the Tohono O'odham word "Ki'ts," meaning "top of the mountain." In 1948, the Tohono O'odham Community College and the University of Arizona collaborated to create a research observatory on this sacred land. Today, Kitt Peak National Observatory is home to over 20 telescopes, making it one of the most significant astronomy centers in the world.

The Hike to the Top

Embark on an unforgettable sunset hike to Kitt Peak's summit and experience the convergence of science, culture, and community. The trailhead begins at the base of the mountain, approximately 8 miles from the observatory campus. Be sure to bring plenty of water, sun protection, and comfortable hiking shoes.

The moderate 4-mile hike takes you through a lush Sonoran Desert landscape, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. As the sun begins its descent, the sky transforms into a kaleidoscope of colors – a perfect backdrop for stargazing.

What to Expect at the Summit

As you reach the summit, take in the stunning 360-degree views of the Quinlan Mountains and the surrounding landscape. The observatory's facilities offer educational exhibits, interactive displays, and guided tours (check with the observatory for availability). On clear nights, witness the darkness of the desert sky, unobstructed by light pollution.
