Discovering Cochise Stronghold's Hidden Trails

As you step into Douglas, Arizona, the rugged landscape whispers secrets of the past. This 3-day hiking adventure will take you through some of the most spectacular landscapes in southern Arizona.

Day 1: Canyon Trail to Red Rock Overlook

Begin your journey at the Canyon Trailhead, located just outside Cochise Stronghold's north entrance. The trail winds its way up a gentle slope, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. As you ascend, keep an eye out for Cochise's Cave, a natural rock shelter that was once used by the Apache leader.

Deer in the Woods
A deer gracefully moves through a dense forest, surrounded by tall trees and lush green undergrowth. The scene captures the serene beauty of a woodland environment.

The trail eventually reaches the Red Rock Overlook, where you can take in panoramic views of the canyon below. This is a great spot to relax and enjoy a picnic lunch while soaking up the sunshine.

Day 2: Stronghold Trail to the Apache Pass

On your second day, start at the Stronghold Trailhead and begin making your way through the rugged terrain. The trail is well-marked and moderately difficult, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

As you hike, keep an eye out for signs of ancient civilizations, including petroglyphs and other archaeological sites. Be sure to respect these sacred areas and any regulations that are in place.

The Stronghold Trail ultimately leads to Apache Pass, a scenic area with stunning views of the canyon below. Take your time exploring this area and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Day 3: Rincon Mountain Loop

On your final day, tackle the Rincon Mountain Loop, a more challenging but rewarding trail that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The loop takes you through a variety of terrain, including forests, canyons, and meadows.
