Fossil Creek's Waterfall Hike: A Step-by-Step Guide

The Fossil Creek waterfall hike is a moderately strenuous 4-mile round-trip journey that rewards hikers with the opportunity to witness the breathtaking beauty of Fossil Creek's hidden falls. As one of the most scenic and accessible waterfalls in Arizona, this hike is an absolute must-do for nature lovers and photographers.

Preparing for Your Hike

Before embarking on your adventure, it's essential to be aware of a few key facts:

  • Permits: During peak season (from May 1st to September 30th), permits are required for groups larger than five people. Make sure to check with the Coconino National Forest Service for more information and to reserve your permit.
  • Weather: Be prepared for changing weather conditions, especially during the summer months when thunderstorms can roll in quickly.
  • Water Conditions: Fossil Creek's water levels can fluctuate depending on snowmelt and rainfall. Be sure to check the creek's water level before heading out.

The Hike

The hike begins at the Fossil Springs Trailhead, where you'll follow the well-marked trail as it winds its way through a lush forest of pine and fir trees. As you make your way along the creek, keep an eye out for fossils embedded in the rocks – hence the creek's name!

The hike becomes more strenuous as you ascend to the top of the falls, but the scenery is nothing short of stunning. Take your time, and don't be afraid to stop and soak in the sights – or snap a few photos!

Reaching the Falls

After approximately 2 miles of hiking, you'll reach the first waterfall, where Fossil Creek drops dramatically into a crystal-clear pool. But the real pièce de résistance is the second waterfall, which cascades down a series of rocky ledges before plunging into another pool.
