History and Significance of San Xavier Mission

San Xavier Mission is a Tohono O'odham Nation mission that has been standing for over 250 years. The mission was established in 1692 by Spanish Franciscan Friars, who arrived at the site to convert the native people to Christianity. Today, the mission is still an active place of worship and learning, with beautiful adobe architecture and stunning artwork on display.

Hiking the San Xavier Mission Trail

The trail begins at the west side of the mission complex, near the chapel. The path takes you through a lush desert garden filled with cacti, paloverde trees, and other unique Sonoran Desert flora. The trail is relatively flat, making it accessible to hikers of all skill levels. The terrain is primarily sand and gravel, with some uneven spots where erosion has taken its toll. Be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen, as the desert sun can be unforgiving even on overcast days.
