Understanding the Geology

Meteor Crater was created around 50,000 years ago when an estimated 150-foot diameter asteroid slammed into the Earth's surface at a speed of approximately 40,000 miles per hour. The impact excavated nearly 600 feet of rock and debris, forming a crater over a mile wide and a half-mile deep. The resulting geological formation is a testament to the power and force of space rocks impacting our planet.

The best way to experience Meteor Crater's sheer scale and beauty is by hiking along the rim trail, which offers five must-see stops that showcase the crater's unique geology:
