The Fascinating Story of Lake Havasu's London Bridge

Perched on the shores of a tranquil lake in Arizona's Sonoran Desert lies an unexpected treasure – London Bridge. Transplanted from its original home across the Thames River in 1968, this iconic landmark now serves as a symbol of the unique blend of cultures that define Lake Havasu City.

Lake Havasu City at Twilight
Serene waters reflect the warm glow of distant lights as boats glide across the surface, with a rugged desert landscape and cacti silhouetted against the twilight sky.

London Bridge's history dates back to the 19th century, when it was built to span the River Thames in London. However, by the mid-20th century, the bridge had become a traffic bottleneck and a safety concern due to its narrow lanes and outdated design. In 1968, the city of London decided to replace the bridge with a more modern structure. A consortium of American entrepreneurs, led by Robert P. McCulloch, saw an opportunity to acquire the bridge and relocate it to their new development in Arizona.

The Move Across the Pond

The bridge was disassembled into 9,100 tons of stone and transported across the Atlantic Ocean to its new home in Lake Havasu City. The move took several months to complete, with the bridge arriving on site in November 1971. After reassembly, the bridge was officially opened to the public in October 1972.

A Piece of London in the Desert

Today, visitors can walk across the original London Bridge, taking in its Gothic Revival architecture and imagining themselves strolling along the River Thames. The surrounding area has been beautifully landscaped, with palm trees, gardens, and a pedestrian pathway leading to the lake's shoreline. Visitors can also explore the Lake Havasu Museum of History, which tells the story of the bridge's relocation and the city's history.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

  • Best Time to Visit: Late afternoon or early evening is ideal for visiting the London Bridge, as the sun sets over the surrounding landscape.

Lake Havasu City has evolved into a vibrant desert oasis, offering a range of outdoor activities, cultural attractions, and amenities. Visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, or simply relaxing on the lake's shoreline. The nearby Lake Havasu State Park offers hiking trails, camping facilities, and opportunities for birdwatching.
